Wood pellet storage hazards
HSE identifies carbon monoxide release and oxygen depletion as hazards in enclosed wood-pellet stores. The danger is not limited to a boiler that is running, and smell cannot establish whether the atmosphere is safe. Emptying the bulk also does not prove safe access. Cleaning is planned to avoid entry where possible, with the necessary assessment for the store and its connection to the boiler system.

Fuel handling after the clean
We remove the agreed deposits without treating cleaning as a service of the boiler or auger. Worn feed parts and other faults need their own maintenance checks. Damp or degraded fuel recovered during the work must be assessed before any reuse. When the store is ready for refill, the heating system’s operating requirements still apply, including any checks associated with isolation and restarting the feed.
Dust and falling fuel remain hazards during removal, and tools or access equipment can introduce additional risks. Non-entry work reduces exposure inside the store but does not remove the need to control the cleaning activity around it.

Can an empty pellet silo still have unsafe air?
Yes. Do not assume a store is safe because the bulk has been removed. Confined-space assessment and appropriate controls remain necessary.
Should I look inside if pellets stop feeding?
Do not enter or put your head into the store. Explain the fault from safe observations and seek competent assessment.
Does biomass silo cleaning include boiler servicing?
Not automatically. Boiler and fuel-feed servicing are separate maintenance activities and remain subject to the equipment manufacturer's requirements.
Can a wood pellet store contain carbon monoxide with the boiler off?
Yes. Stored pellets can release carbon monoxide independently of boiler operation. The store needs the appropriate atmospheric and access assessment.
Can damp or degraded biomass be put back into the fuel store?
Not automatically. Recovered fuel should be assessed in its present condition before any decision on reuse, particularly where moisture or degradation is evident.
