Silo bridging can stop discharge while material remains suspended above the outlet. The opening below it may look clear, but that does not show that the vessel is empty or safe to enter. We assess the obstruction and the available remote clearing methods before material is disturbed.

Bridging and rat-holing

A bridge forms when stored material spans the vessel and leaves a void underneath. It can release suddenly. Rat-holing is different: a channel forms through the product while material remains around the sides. That retained material can also be unstable.

The deposit’s position, consistency and surrounding structure affect the removal method. People must not stand on stored product or work beneath suspended material to restore flow. Where grain is bridged, clearing must exclude silo entry because sudden release can engulf or asphyxiate a person. The clearing plan must also provide somewhere for released material to go without creating another obstruction below the silo.

Investigating repeat blockages

After clearing, we check the agreed discharge path and describe the deposits that remain. Opening the outlet does not necessarily provide a full internal clean. Moisture changes, caking or an accumulation around the cone may still affect the next run.

Repeated bridging warrants investigation of the material and operating conditions. Existing production observations can help establish when the restriction developed; nobody should disturb unstable deposits to obtain a better view. We report where the blockage occurred and what the clearing exposed, so the site can decide whether cleaning, maintenance or an engineering assessment is needed next.

Is a bridge just a blockage at the outlet?

Not always. Material may be suspended higher in the vessel, with a void beneath it, even when the outlet itself looks clear.

Can someone walk on the material to break it up?

No. Stored material can collapse and engulf a person. Assessment and controlled methods are needed without relying on the deposit to support someone.

Will clearing one bridge prevent the next?

Not necessarily. Moisture, material properties or discharge design may continue to cause bridging until the underlying issue is addressed.

How does a bridge differ from rat-holing?

A bridge supports material over a void. Rat-holing leaves a channel through the product with retained material around it; the deposit's shape affects the clearing method.
