Silo decontamination removes identified contamination from the areas needed for the vessel’s next use. It may follow spoiled material, a product mix-up or another contamination event.

The contaminating material
The substance and affected surfaces determine the treatment and checks needed for decontamination.
Residues and washings
Recovered contamination needs suitable containment and an agreed destination appropriate to its contents.
Contamination in retention points
Seams, outlet connections and internal fittings can retain material after the main surfaces look clear. The cleaning method must reach the areas relevant to the contaminant and be compatible with the vessel. A visible clean cannot establish every chemical or microbiological endpoint. Where verification is required, the sampling plan and acceptance criteria should be defined by the appropriate quality or technical assessment before release.

Returning the vessel to use
We explain the completed cleaning and any areas that could not be reached. Decontamination does not automatically mean sterilisation or pest treatment; those are specific outcomes with their own evidence requirements.
The intended next product also matters to vessel compatibility. Cleaning does not establish that the silo construction or any connected transfer equipment is suitable for a different product.
Silo Decontamination: common questions
Does decontamination mean sterilisation?
No. The required endpoint depends on the contaminant and use. Sterility should not be implied by a general cleaning service.
Must transfer equipment be considered too?
Yes, where it may have received or retained the contaminant. The work should state clearly whether connected equipment is included.
What proves decontamination is complete?
The agreed endpoint determines the evidence needed. Some jobs require sampling or other verification beyond a visible clean, set for the contaminant and next use.
Can a decontaminated silo store any new product?
Not automatically. Compatibility and the required cleanliness standard must be assessed for the proposed product, alongside the vessel's own suitability.
