Sugar grade and deposit condition
Granulated sugar, fine sugar and sugar-containing blends can behave differently in bulk storage. The clean depends on the product and whether residue is loose, caked onto surfaces or associated with a restricted outlet.
Moisture history is particularly relevant because it can change free-flowing sugar into cohesive or hardened deposits. A blockage should not be assumed to be loose powder simply because the silo normally handles a dry product.
Sugar dust and explosion risk
HSE lists sugar among food materials that can produce explosible dust. Cleaning methods and equipment therefore need to follow the site’s fire and explosion assessment, including its controls for ignition sources and airborne dust.
Blowing fine sugar from one surface to another can spread dust and contamination. Residue needs to be recovered without unnecessarily contaminating the surrounding working area.
Cleaning after moisture exposure
Water dissolves sugar, but wet cleaning is not suitable for every silo. Drainage, internal finishes, connected equipment and the drying standard all affect whether moisture can be used and whether the silo can be returned to service.
Cleaning also needs to be separated from repair of outlets, valves or conveying equipment. Silos can present confined-space and engulfment hazards even after most of the product has discharged.
Cleanliness before refill
The required condition depends on the next product and the site’s hygiene controls. Before reuse, it should be clear which surfaces were cleaned, what residue remains inaccessible and what checks are required, especially where a product change brings different contamination or allergen controls.
